This is the best commentary on the film I've seen thus far. The author brings in Freudian analysis, which is precisely correct. The story's power can be understood as the power of the unconscious, through the dream world which is inseparable from waking reality for those going insane. It is a glimpse into insanity. For this reason, it is a true masterpiece of film-making. I appreciate the commentary for shedding light on this.

good to see a website devoted to this film. have just finished watching the DVD for the first time. my first impression is that's it's a charming film with some pleasingly understated comic touches that haven't dated too much. the cinematography is also impressive. however, the film does seem to ramble on rather and lack sufficient contrasts in pace and mood to make it a compelling event, and some of the stories within stories are not particularly interesting in themselves. Bunuel has handled this kind of teasing narrative structure much more effectively. overall, then, worth investigating; but not the artistic triumph that some people claim. also, the DVD presentation would have benefited from such Extras; for instance, some comments from the likes of Scorsese and Coppola and Lynch as to why they think the film is so good.
